Latin

Latin dance is a general term referring to a variety of styles of ballroom dance. Since the Latin dance style integrates several different styles, it’s hard to talk about its origin since every style in this group has its own. At the same time, most styles (except jive, which originated in the United States) developed from folk and ritual dances of indigenous tribes of Latin and Central America. There are also some West African and Iberian influences. In terms of styles themselves, there are the following ones:

  • Samba
  • Cha-cha
  • Rumba
  • Paso doble
  • Jive

Since the styles have a strong African and Latin influence, they are all about the expression of one’s feelings and emotions by means of movement. However, due to strong European influence on all the styles and directions, they still have sets of steps and moves that distinguish every style from one another as well as make them more academic.

Nowadays, Latin dance is rather popular all over the world. Moreover, there are millions of schools for both children and adults striving to master this beautiful dance style. In addition to that, professional dancers often participate in competitions that help them gain fame and recognition. Finally, Latin dance styles are rather popular on TV, too, since there are many dance TV shows featuring celebrities.
