Vogue

Vogue is a modern and rather fascinating dance style that evolved in the United States in the 1980s. Not many people know that, but the dance style originated from the Harlem ballroom dance scene, and was developed in the local LGBTQ community. Vogue was mostly performed by African American trans and gay dancers, who popularized the style in the LGBTQ outside community. Soon the style became well-known in other communities since it was featured in many music videos and on TV. As a matter of fact, the dance was featured in Madonna’s music video for her song Vogue, and, according to some experts, that’s how the style got its name.

The style is characterized by fast, usually feminine, moves as well as freezing in poses that are similar to the ones models do during photoshoots. Modern vogue has several substyles, which are:

  • Old way
  • New way
  • Vogue fem

All these substyles and their elements are widely used in modern choreography and often featured in TV shows or music videos.

Today, vogue is rather popular in both LGBTQ and straight dance communities. In fact, many dance studios all over the world offer vogue classes for kids and adults of all ages. Thus, if you are interested in this sophisticated and stylish dance style, make sure to try it.
